Instructions & Application

The Competition

Contestants will be required to design and demo 3 types of engagement:

  1. Voice Control allowing viewers to use voice commands to search for films, change settings, etc.

  2. iTV experience with an existing film – this may be applied to a film you have obtained the rights to use for demo purposes.

  3. iTV experience with a new film – this may be applied to a short film or independent film you or a colleague created that has not been viewed publically or sold to another party.

Types of iTV Experiences

You may apply any of the types of engagement listed below, or you may develop a unique type of engagement, or incorporate a mixture of either:

  1. Adaptive Storytelling - Real-time generation of story content.  The user chooses alternative routes within a narrative.

  2. “Fake Storytelling” - Users are given the impression that they can actually make choices and influence the outcome of a story; however, the design of the interaction is set up in such a way that all users end up at roughly the same finishing point.

  3. Scenescapes: Virtual Reality (VR) experience - Instead of telling a whole story in a linear succession of scenes that together form a plot, in this type of scene called scenescape, the viewer may be invited to look around and explore, and instead of affecting the plot, participate in the surroundings that the scene is set in.                  VR Examples  How VR Works

  4. 360’ Storytelling - The 360 format is used to tell a story in both live action and animation. The audience clicks play, uses the mouse or arrow keys to explore scenes from a 360 degree perspective, and the story unfolds before them. See Bashir’s Dream

Criteria for Judging

Contestants will be judged on:

  1. Originality – How unique is the model you’re creating?

  2. Quality of the interactive experience – what kind(s) of interactivity did you incorporate? Can you switch seamlessly from one experience to the next? How does the viewer respond?

  3. Ease of use – Does your model require special gadgets or instructions? How user friendly is it?

  4. Relatability of content – Is your film applicable to a Christian audience?  Is it meaningful? Is there a teachable moment or redemptive nature to the storyline or interactive experience?  How relevant is the content to our culture today?

Demo

Contestants must create 2 video demos (each 5 min. max): One iTV model with an existing film; and one iTV model with an original film.  Feel free to include written or voice instructions with your demos, if necessary. Upload your videos (formatted as .mp4)  Upload here.
